West Ham have agreed a £5.5m fee with the Swiss club Sion for Edimilson Fernandes, with the 6ft 3", 20-year-old midfielder set to travel to London on Wednesday for a medical.

Fernandes, who is a cousin of the former Manchester City player Gélson Fernandes, is a product of Sion’s youth system and made 26 appearances in the Swiss Super league last season, scoring one goal. He also started the Europa League group stage tie against Liverpool last October, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Slaven Bilic has been searching for midfield reinforcements for his squad with Italian clubs also showing an interest in Pedro Obiang this week. Fernandes, who has played for Switzerland’s Under-21 side, is expected to sign a four-year contract with the club in the coming days, subject to passing his medical.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bilic admitted he is interested in Manchester City’s Wilfried Bony, while Simone Zaza is reported to be weighing up a move from Juventus.

The West Ham co-chairman David Sullivan is recuperating after heart surgery on Tuesday. The 67-year-old’s son, David Sullivan Jr, tweeted a picture of his father lying in his hospital bed on his mobile phone. In his tweet, Sullivan Jr went on to suggest his father was already back to negotiating the arrival of new players at West Ham, with the transfer window closing in a week’s time.

“Dad has just had heart surgery, woke up from operation and is straight back on the phone to sign more players,” he said.

Re: Edmilson Fernandes
Seems a lot for someone who plays for a shite team in the Swiss league and who has under 30 games to their name.

Another one for the future maybe.

Re: Edmilson Fernandes
Must be quite highly rated if we're paying £5.2m for a relatively un-known midfielder.

Even though he's 20, I'm assuming he'll come in as a squad player for that price and considering he's a first teamer in the Swiss league?

My only problem is, why not just give Cullen the odd chance rather than loan him out?

Seems to be a replacement for Obiang.

Re: Edmilson Fernandes
AM, Obiang was a DM so no direct replacement, getting congested in midfield something has to give.

Re: Edmilson Fernandes
Never heard of him, his cousin was shit, he's from a shit league, playing for a shit team, shit stats, so will be a shit transfer....boo

J.Riddle 3:33 Wed Aug 24
Re: Edmilson Fernandes
He’s already made five appearances for Sion this season in Swiss football, coming off a very strong season in 2015/16 where he made 39 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and tallying seven assists, his best single-season totals in each of those categories in his career.

Fernandes is a forward-thinking central midfielder who can also operate in a more advanced role or on the right of midfield.

Rossal 3:39 Wed Aug 24
Re: Edmilson Fernandes
Never ever seen him play or heard of him

Really cant make this one out, squad player to cover the no10 role i hope but already have Tore and Browne there.

Dont get the replacement for Obiang....different position and Obiang seems happy here

But for £5.5 worth getting in and having a look at, I trust Slav with these random signings...can't argue with his track record

Re: Edmilson Fernandes
Perhaps we need to let Obiang go to Milan to open up another deal with them...

Rossal. Reckon it's more of a Tony Henry shout. Than Slav's. And Diddy Dave being over the moon with getting a future international on the cheap.
